Bhajias are one of the most popular savoury snacks among the South African Indian community. Commonly referred to as chilli bites, the South African Indian bhajia somewhat differs from those prepared in India. The thick batter can be used to make fritters by coating potato slices, eggplant (brinjal) or even whole de-seeded fresh chilli.

Ingredients

250g of Chilli Bite powder mix (available in most stores)
3 finely sliced green chillies
1 large sprig of spring onion, finely chopped
½ a medium sized onion, diced finely
6 leaves of chopped mint
½ a level teaspoon of mixed ginger and garlic paste
Water to make a thick batter
Oil for frying

Method

  1. Combine together the chillies, spring onion, onion, and mint.
  2. Add the chilli bite mix and finely crushed ginger and garlic.
  3. Stir in a little water, enough to form a thick batter.
  4. Heat the oil in a frying pan and spoon in the mixture.
  5. Fry until golden brown.
  6. Serve while hot.
