simple steps to ACHIEVE your personal best
Successful people have a commitment to continued improvement…
Professionally speaking, can you honestly say you are the best you can be right now? Are your skills relevant to your personal and career aspirations? Will they still be relevant, and sought after, 5 years from now?
The truth is they can be. Provided you do what you know you should do. For many of us the “what” may be clear in terms of our personal vision and goals, but the “how” is often a little more complicated and challenging to figure out. Exactly how do I get there?
Achieving long-term goals is all about having a vision and sense of purpose, optimism, resilience, focus and discipline, excellence and short-term efficiency; in other words: personal mastery.
“Personal mastery is about creating what one wants in life and in work.”
Peter Senge, The 5th Discipline
In his book The 5th Discipline Peter Senge goes on to say that personal mastery is the habit of continually refining your personal vision, focusing your energies, persevering, and having an objective perception of reality in order to live life in a way that nurtures your highest aspirations.
This brings us back to the question of “how?” What can we DO to make our dreams come true? There are an infinite number of books, blogs, seminars providing an enormous amount of information on the ‘how”, offering all sorts of ideas related to achieving personal and professional goals. This article comprises a short list of the simplest and most practical suggestions sure to help you on your way to personal mastery and the achievement of your aspirations.
The first step of any journey is to know where you want to go. This applies to professional goal-related journeys as well. Spend time thinking about career and personal aspirations that energise you, appeal to you, and inspire you – write down anything that comes to mind. Weight each idea (1 to 10) in terms of how excited they make you feel. Think of the vision/dream you have in the present tense & be as specific as you can be – your thinking will become clear about the results you are striving for. Once you have a clear picture of where you are heading then set a deadline – your actions will now become focused and relevant to fulfilling your vision.
Questions to ask yourself as you set about achieving your vision…
What knowledge & skills will I need to acquire to achieve my goal? Setting inspiring goals always involves the need to change and grow, particularly in terms of knowledge and skills. Successful people all seem to have a commitment to continuous improvement in everything they do, in all areas of their life. They are lifelong learners; grabbing every opportunity to learn. They don’t hang about longing for their vision to miraculously happen; they take personal responsibility for the control they have in learning, practicing, volunteering for opportunities to gain more knowledge and experience, creating opportunity and advancement for themselves. They read, they listen, they try, and they participate in every learning opportunity presented to them. Personal development and excellence helps us meet today's expectations & requirements as well as tomorrow's possibilities. What training and development are you participating in? What are you reading that will help you develop the skills you need to achieve your vision?
Whose assistance and support will I need? No person can go it entirely alone. The people around you are a great source of support, experience and leverage. With this in mind ensure your ‘relationship’, ‘communication’, and ‘networking’ skills are excellent. What are you doing to develop in these areas?
What inspires and motivates me? Create a vision board. Write down ideas. Have something visual that instantly reminds you of your goals. Spend time with or observing others you admire. Write down what you learn. Even reading an autobiography can be like spending time learning from someone you admire. Who are you learning from right now?
What risks am I willing to take? You will have to leave your comfort zones and be willing to embrace change on the outside as well as the inside. It is not always comfortable or easy, but definitely worth it. It will take courage and conviction.
How do I compile an effective Action Plan? Using your own common sense and relevant advice from others, start making a note of actions and strategies that will move you forward – adapt them as you go to achieve optimal results. Have a plan to avoid or deal with any obstacles that might hinder or distract you from the goal. Do you have a written Action Plan?
What can I do now, today that will move me toward the goal? Constantly look for ways to get yourself started on your road to success. Be open to opportunities or potential opportunities – they may not always be obvious. Be willing to try, persevere, and follow-up. What did you do today that helped you take a step closer to Personal Mastery and your goals?
Personal Mastery means doing what you’re good at and becoming the best you can be at it; a master. Learn more. Read books relevant to your talents, interests, and goals. Be excellent in all you do.
Practise. Practise. Practise. In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell describes how individuals such as Bill Gates, amongst others, spent approximately 10,000+ hours practising the skills that led to his success. Many other stories of success affirm the pattern of 10,000 hours of practice required to operate at that level of mastery. Ask your organisation for opportunities to practise and hone your new skills. The more they see the results the more inclined they will be to offer you more learning and promotion opportunities.
Additional points to consider as you become more and more adept at Personal Mastery:
Be responsible for your own success and results
Place appropriate value on your skills, talents, and resources
Plan - make decisions and implement relevant strategies
Challenge your own thinking – be creative, inquisitive and innovative – be full of expectation
Lastly, Personal Mastery it is about OWNERSHIP: taking responsibility for YOUR dream, YOUR talent, and YOUR life. It is about learning, falling and failing, getting up again, and growing through every experience. Create and INFUSE your life with opportunity and excellence.
