5 Questions to ask in an interview.
Many job seekers forget they are there to ask questions too. As a job applicant it is important to realise you are also interviewing the organisation to ensure the role and the organisation would be the right match for you. Asking thoughtful questions in the interview demonstrates an interest in the organisation, and will give the interviewer further insight into your qualities and competencies not already revealed in the interview. Your questions are expected and welcomed by most Hiring Managers, Supervisors, and Human Resources staff; failing to ask questions may make you appear unprepared, disinterested or desperate.
Below are suggested questions to ask in an interview in order to determine if the organisation, and role, is a good match for you.
What skills and experiences would you expect the ideal candidate to possess? This is a great opportunity to gain a solid understanding of what the role entails and how you can meet the expectations. If this raises a requirement that has not yet been discussed in interview it would give you a chance to provide more information regarding relevant skills and experience.
How will the organisation help me develop? Or, does the organisation offer ongoing professional development or training? This shows you are interested in growing your knowledge and capabilities – especially important if you are expected to expand the role and/or business. This development could be in the form of training, coaching and mentoring, conference attendance, etc.
How does the organisation evaluate performance or measure success? What comprises success for this role and the organisation? Every organisation evaluates or measures performance differently. This question will provide information on whether there is a formal performance evaluation or a more casual approach to the performance review processes. This will provide insight into how important performance is to the organisation. In addition, it helps to gain clarity in terms of expectations, and where you can learn and grow. It also demonstrates a desire to succeed and a willingness to contribute to the success of the organisation.
What are the responsibilities of this role or position? Or, how would you describe a typical week or day in this role? Allows you to get a glimpse of the role and what would be expected of you to deliver.
How does this role contribute to the growth of the organisation? Shows big-picture thinking and allows you to understand the impact and importance of the role in the broader context of the organisation.
